SAMI Enhances Competencies. 9M33 SAM Repairs: Experience, Technology, Prospects

Ремонт ЗУР 9М33: опыт, технология, перспективы

Radioelectronic Armament Repair Plant JSC successfully repairs the 9M33M2(M3) surface-to-air missiles for the 9A33BM2(BM3) combat vehicles of the Osa surface-to-air missile system.

As the service life of these products has ended and they are no longer produced by the manufacturer, their proper reconditioning is a critical task today.

The main technological difficulty is the one-piece design of the welded body of the instrumentation compartment significantly blocking access to radioelectronic equipment. The plant’s experts have handled this problem with success. They created a one-of-a-kind system of body cutting and welding equipment, developed special-purpose tooling and instruments. Their major achievement was that they solved a critical problem, namely how to make a robust hermetic weld while heating the inner surface of the compartment as little as possible to completely rule out the damaging of sensitive equipment.

The repair process is complicated and contains a series of successive steps:
•    diagnostics of faulty units and assemblies;
•    cutting and opening of the instrumentation compartment;
•    unit disassembly and fault detection;
•    repairs of onboard equipment, adjustment and setup of onboard equipment parameters;
•    body reassembly and hermetic welding;
•    paintwork and marking renewal;
•    final check using special test equipment.

The enterprise does not rest on its laurels. It concurrently conducts missile upgrading works aimed at increasing the combat capabilities and improving the performance characteristics of missiles.

All the set tasks have been fulfilled. Multiple combat launches vividly demonstrate the success and high quality of repairs.
